Fundraising Details and Events

by Figheldean Webmaster at 13:22 10/06/19 (Save Our Woods)
Ablington Woods were to be auctioned on 29th May this year, but with the swift intervention of Figheldean Parish Councillors Jackie Dryden (Vice Chair) and Tina Cole plus Carol Watton the then Parish Clerk, and with the help of our MP Claire Perry who intervened on our behalf, we managed to negotiate with the DIO (Department of Infrastructure Organisation) who were selling the woods to purchase them for £27,500 for the Parish.

A 10% deposit was paid before the auction date (phew!) and we were given nine months to fund raise for the remainder. We need to raise £32,000 to include solicitor fees and maintenance for the first year. The parish council will also need to find a contractor to maintain the woods; we will organise an annual fundraiser to contribute towards its upkeep.

At a fundraising meeting on 4th June it was decided that if anyone would like to donate money towards the funding of the woods, the best option would be to give directly to the Parish Council, who are buying the woods and the money held in this account belongs to parishioners anyway; we all pay a precept each year. The money will be ring-fenced in the account.

If you wish to donate then please email Sandra Burch, the Parish Clerk for instructions and please let her know if you wish to be anonymous, her email address is parishclerk [@] figheldean [dot] org

Anyone though is welcome to organise their own event and is also welcome to set up their own just giving or crowd funding page, this is something the Parish Council cannot do as it is not a non-profit organisation or charity. Just giving is popular and individuals can set up their own pages for events, but making sure that monies are paid into the Parish Council account. Villager Lee Searles has set up a Just Giving page, here:

Charity or Trust - Not an Option

If you set up a charity or trust you need a chair and trustees it’s the minimum of three, you have to set up a bank account, keep accounts and publish them with an annual report on the charity commission’s web site. You have to prepare a governance paper, which is rules and regulations for your trust. Also, as a charity or trust you are raising money for a third party, and not using the money for your own charity causes. The charity commission would not like this at all.

Events so far

All events will go under the banner ‘Save Our Woods’ and at Figgle Fest this year, there will be a donation from any takings on the day. Graham Watson and Tony Morgan will be fundraising with their Zider Making and they are going to organise a treasure hunt – all the fundraisers in that area will be dressed up as pirates!

Auction on 19th July

This will be at the Working Men’s Club again, organised by Graham and Tony, they are looking for donations for auction lots and raffle prizes, if you have anything you would like to donate, then please contact Tony or Graham (you know where to find their contact details, if you live in the Parish).

Figheldean & Ablington Extravaganza 31st August

This will be held on the Playing Field from 1pm and will be organised by several villagers who have formed their own committee and include Tony, Graham, Lou Sleeman, Ian Satchell, Katy and Brad Sturgess and Pat Jordan (apologies if I have missed someone out). It will consist of a BBQ, vintage vehicles, games, bar, craft stalls, tombola and much more. Bring the family along for some good old-fashioned fun to end the summer hols!

Other events to be organised include:

A Family Quiz in the Working Men’s Club, Christmas Ball, Adopt a Tree, a Christmas and Halloween event in the woods with lights, a jumble sale.

If you would like to help with any of these events or would like to set up your own, then please email j.dryden [@] figheldean [dot] org

There will be another village fundraising meeting on 23rd July in the village hall at 7.30pm, all welcome.
