Figheldean Millpond in modern times

Figheldean Mill Pond is first mentioned in the Domesday Book, and there was a mill here right up until the late 1950s when it was demolished.

In latter years it's become something of a neglected, nettle-filled, litter-strewn wilderness but thanks to permission from the Ministry of Defence Estates, the advice and outstanding help of the Living River Project and the enthusiasm of village volunteers we're starting to gradually improve the area.

With the help of a dozen folk from Sparsholt College, the stakes to retain the materials for repairing the bank were put in place over the course of only a few hours. Here are some photos.

The is preparatory work with the Living River Project and will include putting the stakes and bank restoration mesh in place.

Sparsholt College have kindly offered the services of half a dozen students to do the wet and heavy work, but anyone who would like to pop along and watch the progress will be most welcome (especially if they bring tea and biscuits!)

We've been given the formal go-ahead by the MoD to proceed with the restoration plan for the Mill Pond, and the application for the consent of the Environment Agency has been submitted by Living River on our behalf.

Dates for working parties of volunteers will be decided on shortly.

Figheldean (and its mill) is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Here is what it says...

For a great many years Reg, Tim and Chris were really the only people to have taken any active regular interest in maintaining the area around the Mill Pond by periodically cutting the grass, removing the litter and helping to prevent vehicles from getting access to the riverbank.

They've done all that without fuss but more importantly without any real thanks, which is a shame. Without their efforts the area would be a terrible eyesore.

There don't seem to be very many old pictures available of Figheldean Mill Pond, so if you know of any that aren't on this page please let me know.
