Ablington Amenity Plantation is the 3.4 acres of woodland between Figheldean and Ablington where Ablington House once stood prior to its demolition in 1963.

This much loved and well used woodland has been put up for sale by DIO to the highest bidder. The communities of Figheldean and Ablington are trying to prevent this happening.

Latest news and developments will be posted here, and you can also keep up by following the Figheldean Parish News Facebook group.

Ablington Woods were to be auctioned on 29th May this year, but with the swift intervention of Figheldean Parish Councillors Jackie Dryden (Vice Chair) and Tina Cole plus Carol Watton the then Parish Clerk, and with the help of our MP Claire Perry who intervened on our behalf, we managed to negotiate with the DIO (Department of Infrastructure Organisation) who were selling the woods to purchase them for 27,500 for the Parish.

A 10% deposit was paid before the auction date (phew!) and we were given nine months to fund raise for the remainder. We need to raise 32,000 to include solicitor fees and maintenance for the first year. The parish council will also need to find a contractor to maintain the woods; we will organise an annual fundraiser to contribute towards its upkeep.

Ablington Woods have now been acquired by the Parish Council through the payment of a deposit to DIO, and we now have 9 months to raise the remaining 25000.

A meeting to discuss fundraising will be held at FIgheldean Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 4th June. All welcome.

The following statement was read out last night at the Annual Parish Meeting by Jackie Dryden (Vice Chair, Parish Council).

It's encouraging news, but we need to get cracking if we're to actually Save Our Woods.

To discuss new developments relating to Ablington Woods. 8pm on 7th May in the Village Hall.
Tuesday 16th April, Figheldean Village Hall, 7.30pm.

Updates on where we are right now will be given.

Parish Council meetings are open to the public to observe and, at the beginning of the meeting, to ask questions.

In the first instance, please write to our MP Claire Perry and ask her to use her influence to stop the sale. If you have enjoyed spending time in these woods, tell her your story and point out just how important they are to the community.

You can find her email address on her website, or you can email her via the They Work For You website.

These are the minutes of the Public Meeting held in the VIllage Hall on Monday 8th April 2019 concerning the attempt by Defence Infrastructure Organisation to sell off Ablington Amenity Plantation woodland by auction.
